dividing line

We had no intention of taking on Ye Old Sun Inn when we stepped through the door all those years ago. But one look was all it took to convince us this was the pub for us.

We’d previously dismissed it because, to be honest, it was too successful. We wanted somewhere on its knees that we could build up. And it also only came with a two-bedroom flat above the pub – not ideal when you’ve got three lively, growing boys.

But people kept telling us about this great pub in Colton so, in the end, we came out to see it just to shut everyone up. Maybe it was fate, but as soon as we walked through the door, that was it. We knew we’d found what we were looking for.

Taking on Ye Old Sun Inn is the culmination of years of experience in the hospitality industry. We both began working in restaurants as teenagers and actually met while working at a pub on the outskirts of York.

After our sons, Josh, Ben and Liam, came along, we knew we wanted to create a family business and raise them in a welcoming, safe place. Ye Old Sun Inn and the surrounding village of Colton has proved perfect on both counts.
Our first two years were hard, with a learning curve that felt mountainously steep, but we got through with the unwavering support of the local community.

We got our first taste of official industry recognition in 2005 when we were nominated in the dining pub category of the prestigious Yorkshire Life Food & Drink Awards. The following year we scooped the Innovation of the Year title in The Publican magazine – known widely as the industry bible – for creating a small on-site deli. Since then, we’ve won a great many accolades, including Yorkshire Pub of the Year at the White Rose Awards, Best Freehouse in the Great British Pub Awards and, perhaps most notably of all, Licensee of the Year 2013 by the BII (British Institute of Innkeepers).

We’ve achieved a lot but we’re not ready to put our feet up just yet. We keep challenging ourselves and pushing for ways to improve all the time. We’re always trying new things to attract new people and also to give our existing much-valued customers another reason to come back again and again.

So why not come and join us next time you’re passing?

We’d love to see you.

Ashley & Kelly
